Discover the Story of Mondrian's Composition with Grid IX

Composition with Grid IX was created by Piet Mondrian in 1919, at a pivotal moment in the history of abstract art. Working in his Paris studio, Mondrian stripped painting down to its purest elements — bold black lines, right angles, and primary colours — creating a visual language that would go on to influence architecture, graphic design, and fashion for over a century.

This work is part of Mondrian's De Stijl movement, a Dutch artistic philosophy that sought harmony and order through pure abstraction. Where other artists of his time still referenced the natural world, Mondrian believed that pure geometry could express something deeper: a universal truth beneath the surface of things.

Today, Mondrian's grids are recognised the world over — and woven into every stitch of these extraordinary socks.
