Fenced Field with a Ploughman shows a solitary farmer working the land within a broad, enclosed landscape. The fence creates a strong frame around the field, while the ploughman and his horse bring movement and human presence to the scene. Van Gogh used energetic brushstrokes and rich earthy colours to express the changing textures of the land and sky. The painting reflects his deep admiration for rural life and for the dignity of people who work the soil. Inspired in part by the rural scenes of Jean-François Millet, Van Gogh transformed farm labour into a powerful and deeply expressive subject.
