Discover the story of Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer by Vincent van Gogh

Painted in June 1888 during his visit to the coastal village of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, this vibrant work captures the colourful fishing boats resting on the sandy beach under a brilliant blue sky. Van Gogh was captivated by the light and colour of the Mediterranean coast — the bold reds, yellows and greens of the boats contrasting vividly against the blue sea. He made several drawings and paintings during his short stay, fascinated by the fishermen's way of life. The painting is now part of the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
