Discover the Story of Raphael's Angels

These two dreamy cherubs are among the most recognised figures in all of art history. Gazing upward with curious, contemplative eyes, they appear at the bottom of Raphael's Sistine Madonna (1512), painted for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, Italy. Today the original hangs in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, Germany — but these iconic little angels have taken on a life of their own, appearing on everything from postcards to... art socks.
