Discover the story about Sandro Botticelli's The Birth of Venus

The Birth of Venus was painted around 1485 in Florence, Italy, for the Medici family.

Botticelli used tempera on canvas, a rare choice at the time, creating soft colours and delicate, flowing lines.

He was inspired by classical antiquity and Renaissance poetry, depicting the goddess Venus born from the sea foam.

Venus arrives at the shore on a giant scallop shell, blown by the wind god Zephyr and welcomed by the goddess of spring, who offers her a flowing cloak.

Today, it is displayed at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy.
