White Horse Frightened by a Lion is one of George Stubbs's most dramatic and emotionally charged masterpieces, painted in 1770. It depicts a magnificent white horse rearing up in terror as a lion attacks from behind — a scene of raw power, fear, and untamed nature that Stubbs returned to many times throughout his career. Stubbs was fascinated by this primal confrontation between horse and lion, and produced over a dozen variations of the theme. The paintings are thought to reflect both his scientific interest in animal anatomy and a deeper fascination with the forces of nature and the sublime. The white horse — rearing, vulnerable, yet magnificent — has become one of the most iconic images in British art. Today versions of this painting can be found in the collections of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.
