Whistlejacket is one of the most celebrated and instantly recognisable paintings in British art. Painted around 1762 by George Stubbs — the greatest horse painter in history — it depicts a magnificent racehorse in full, life-size glory against a plain golden background. The absence of a landscape or rider gives the painting an extraordinary power and modernity, placing all attention on the beauty and spirit of the animal itself. Whistlejacket was a real horse, owned by the Marquess of Rockingham, and was celebrated for his speed and temperament. Stubbs was renowned for his meticulous study of equine anatomy, and this painting is considered his masterpiece. Today, Whistlejacket hangs in the National Gallery in London, where it never fails to stop visitors in their tracks.
