Discover the story of Henri Matisse's the parakeet and the mermaid.

Created in 1952–1953, this work is part of Henri Matisse’s famous paper cut-outs, made in his final years when he could no longer paint traditionally. With bold shapes and colour, it reflects the expressive spirit of Fauvism, the movement he helped inspire.

The artwork is part of the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
