The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a print by Katsushika Hokusai, created around 1831–1833.

It was made using the ukiyo-e woodblock printing technique, with carved woodblocks and natural pigments on paper.

Hokusai was inspired by the power of the sea and the view of Mount Fuji. The work was made for a wide public audience, not a specific person.

You can see it in the The British Museum in London and the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
