Composition with Grid IX was created by Piet Mondrian in 1919, at a pivotal moment in the history of abstract art. Working in his Paris studio, Mondrian stripped painting down to its purest elements — bold black lines, right angles, and primary colours — creating a visual language that would go on to influence architecture, graphic design, and fashion for over a century.
