The Night Watch is a painting by Rembrandt van Rijn, created in 1642.

It is made with oil on canvas using dramatic light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to create depth and movement.

The work was commissioned by the Amsterdam civic militia, led by Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch.

Rembrandt was inspired by traditional group portraits and by Italian Baroque masters such as Caravaggio, especially in his use of light, contrast, and realism. He transformed the genre into a dynamic, storytelling scene full of energy and action.
